The Great Deck Chair Auction
The 10th Anniversary
-
Season
24 Jun — 24 Jun 2008, 2pm
-
Venue
Victoria Hall, 179 High Street, Fremantle
Like all great ideas there is an argument amongst the staff at deckchair theatre over who came up with the idea to ask visual artists to paint the canvas of deck chairs and then auction the works as a way to raise funds for the company.
Regardless of who was responsible for the concept The Great Deck Chair Auction is a unique event created to support a unique arts organisation.
First held in 1997, over the past nine years it has grown consistently and is now considered a high profile arts event on the Perth social calendar.
This fantastic occasion is an opportunity to see the cutting edge of visual art in Western Australia, support the creation of new Australian theatre and maybe even snap up a bargain.
TICKETS $20 / $15 concession, deckchair theatre members free. Entry includes free drinks and finger food.

Party Pack (Bohemian Pilzner deck chair + 5 cartons of beer)
Ever since Matilda Bay first started brewing beer, they have been committed to honouring the traditions of their craft and one such tradition is the brewing of a classic pilsner style. Pilsners are usually a highly hopped style of lager, crisp and golden. This style was first brewed, circa 1842, in Pilsen in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic).
This is the 7th year that Matilda Bay Brewing Company is the naming rights sponsor of The Great Deck Chiar Auction.
Jonathon Campbell
Dissolving #33 (oil)
Campbell was born in Northam, WA and graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Curtin University in 1989. He has an interest in the relationship between object and retina, and the way light is repelled and absorbed. His work explores tonal colour relations, randomly and without planning or modelling. Campbell’s horizontal sequences of blurring colour are defined by hard edged vertical lines. The colour melding is produced by wiping most of the paint off the brush, allowing the smallest amount of the oil paints to gently mix. The vertical lines are held fast in the painting process with strips of tape, and uncovering the work is often a surprise.
Campbell has been involved in a number of solo and group exhibitions, including the Whayally Art Award in SA (2006), Artbank Collection, Perth (2006), Old Customs House Open Studios (2004), Joondalup Invitation Art Award (2003), BankWest Contemporary Art Prize (2003). He was the winner of the Corporate Section- Mandurah Art Award in 2005 and his work held in various corporate and private collections.
Aadje Bruce
Tough Love (plastic)
Aadje Bruce is always surprised at the amount of spikey, aggressive objects people seem to have around and wonders what thoughts and desires they may provoke. She wants to incorporate unease and fun at the same time and an attractive, dense, unusual and slightly menacing surface.
Born in Holland in 1934, Aadje graduated in 1957 with a BA in Fine Art, Fiber Textiles from Kunstnijverheidschool—Rietveld Academie- Amsterdam. She then went on to complete a Diploma of Art at Perth Technical College in 1982, a BA in Sculpture at Curtin University in 1990 and a MA in Visual Arts at Curtin University in 1995.
Aadje has been involved in a number of solo and group exhibition and her work is held in various public and private collections, nationally and Internationally.
Annie Rawle
Distance (Mixed Media)
Annie is a Fremantle based artist who has been working in the textile medium since her arrival in Perth from the UK 12 years ago. Known for her stitched textile art, she is now returning to painting in acrylics and is experimenting with combining the 2 media, as seen in this year’s deck chair. She also produces stitched gift items, available through outlets such as the Fremantle Arts Centre Craft Shop. Teaching is the third string to her bow and she runs Catalyst Textile Workshops.
Back in the UK she worked in the wardrobe dept of Sterts Theatre Co in Cornwall and it is this past link with the theatre that makes it such a pleasure to support the Great Deck Chair Auction once again this year. Her deck chair for 2006 uses the theme of Tough Love by reflecting, in an abstract way, the emotional difficulties of living on the other side of the world to her close and much loved family.

Craig Silvey + Sonia Martinez
The World According To Warren (manuscript + illustration)
Craig Silvey is the author of Rhubarb, a novel understood to be the most important piece of literature written in the greater Fremantle region for the month of May in the year 2004. It went on to sell tens of copies, and drew effusive praise from Craig’s close friends and family. Rhubarb also made Australian literary history by including the first ever explicitly rendered love-making scene between two native marsupials, which, astonishingly, has been largely unnoticed and unrewarded by The Wilderness Society and CALM pundits. Whilst he stubbornly persists in blindly scribbling more turgid prose, Craig’s attention was diverted recently by an opportunistic quick-cash scheme involving one of Rhubarb’s best loved characters. The World According To Warren, the world’s most anticipated illustrated – story – involving – a – guide – dog – originally – featured – in – a – work – of – australian – literary – fiction, is to hit the shelves soonishly.

Emma Langridge
Tough Love (Two panels, 60cm x 30cm each. Black oil on aluminium)
More than either the information I start with or the resulting work, the process is where I find the impetus to paint. To build something in steady, insignificant increments, to place line over line, each unit containing its own discrepancies and errors… creating an overall effect, a unity far from perfect but also free from contrivance.
In this work, I have used the repeated form of the letters T and L as a basic pattern, breaking the plane of the picture into horizontal, vertical and black areas. Tessellation of form, the truncation of a continuing pattern; this is merely a way of playing with ambiguity and assumption, without making reference to forms outside the work itself.
Story by Tang
Untitled
Story by Tang was launched in 2002 by Christine Tang. The label caters to young females, from 16 to 35. It is a distinctive, stylish alternative to commercial labels such as Kookai and One Teaspoon. Recently the label has evolved into a respected international representation of the unique standard of style WA has to offer. It focuses on an artistic and distinctive look which clients chose to wear to stand out in a crowd.
In December 2001, Christine was fortunate enough to collaborate with 5 other designers to create the retail space and boutique, Merge Clothing. In October 2004, Christine was invited to participate in her first national group show – New Generation at autumn-winter MAFW. Here, 14 domestic and international buyers placed orders with Story by Tang. NOZ
Passion (acrylic)
Born 1951 in Australia. Dennis Nozworthy began painting in prison in 1983, mostly self-taught, while acquiring a Diploma of fine art with T.A.F.E. and a B.A. in art through Curtin University. Being creative, making art and music, was a way to survive 22 years of prison. In the isolation of prison, the only artistic challenges are the ones you set yourself, and for any artist, the real challenge is to make original works of art, to make something that hasn’t been done or seen before.
Kyle Hughes-Odgers
Tough Love Tiger Pants (Spray paint, acrylic and artline)
Kyle Hughes-Odgers is an artist / illustrator based in Perth, Western Australia. Although he shared his time growing up between the Solomon Islands, Holland and Melbourne.
Kyles unique style of artwork has been heavily influenced by an early interest in comic books and comic book art. Also by people seen on the street, the bizarre human condition, and humorous observations of life and what it means to exist.
Deck chair description: When George thought back to how he got in this situation, all he could remember was going for a walk with his girlfriend and the sweet smell of her perfume and then her voice started to echo his eyes became blurry and he fell into a deep sleep George woke in a bedroom, his head covered with some sort of mask and his hands boundmmmphhh George struggled to speak through the mask, his girlfriend appeared. She looked at him sympathetically with her head on a slight tilt. George began to get concerned, his eyes glancing sideways he will never forget her words Tough Love, Tiger pants.
Kyles solo exhibition “You can take my money, but you will never get my arms” opens on Saturday 17 June at Distracted in Leederville (runs until 15 July).

Rob Forlani
Cusp III (acrylic)
Forlani lives and works in Perth, where he was born. He has developed a following across Australia and his paintings are seen in galleries and private collections in Sydney, Melbourne, WA & Queensland. Known for his bold application of colour and texture, Forlani’s canvasses are filled with shapes that at first seem familiar, but suggest a parallel world reachable only through the imagination. In a lustrous palette and a musical style of tempered expressionism, Forlani paints abstract images inspired by the colours and forms from the world around us, and by the thoughts and theories, emotions and daydreams from within.
Rob Forlani’s vibrant artwork is currently featured in a globally renowned interior store situated in San Francisco until 31 July, 2006.
“We’re very happy to open our new store with an exhibition that’s so bold and colourful,” says Zinc Details’ owner Vasilios Kiniris. “Forlani’s paintings bring electricity into any room.”
It was six years ago when Rob decided to become a full-time artist. Since then, he has sold and exhibited hundreds of paintings in Western Australia, Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast, New York and San Francisco as well as completing private commission pieces for companies such as Coca-Cola, ANZ Banking, NSC Property Consultants, Crisp Civitella Smith lawyers, City of Stirling municipal offices, The Heart Foundation & the Joondalup Health campus to name a few. This global artist is set for a solo exhibition in Stockholm in August 2006, where 30 pieces will be displayed at the prestigious Art Moderna Gallerier.
Paula Hart
Budget Accmm, Stable Only (digital photomontage)
Paula Hart’s 20 year arts career has moved from textiles to union banners to community art, from community art to festival art to public art and now is nearly at a full circle back with a new venture in textiles. She has used medium as diverse as papier-mâché, digital photomontage and metal.
“Budget Accmm, Stable Only” is a small compilation piece taken from a large scale work constructed during 2004. During her many travels across WA over that year, Paula collected samples and photographs of uniquely Western Australian objects and places and used these images to create a truly Australian Nativity.
Kaz Cooke
Tough Love (drawing)
Kaz Cooke writes books and other stuff and draws cartoons. She is the inventor of the cartoon character Hermoine the Modern Girl. (It’s pronounced Her-moy-nee.) Modern Girls (and guys) of all ages love her funny and sensible takes on everything from starting puberty to menopause, and from fashion disasters to self esteem, pregnancy, and new age madness. Unlike many other authors, who write their own short biographies, she does not live in a tumble-down country estate with her mysterious model-airline pilot husband and ludicrously artistic children while dividing her time between New York, the Amalfi coast and Tuscany. And one day, by jingo, she might do something about it.
Philip Berry
Pastoral LIfe
Pastoral Life was completed in one session in February 2006 on the roadside near Forrest Beach in Ludlow near where I now reside. Most of my new work depicts landscapes in the different seasons and are painted plein-air style.
Stormie Mills
High Dive
Since launching his career as a visual artist in 1984 Stormie Mills has carved a distinctive niche for his work that has seen him showcased internationally to critical acclaim. His work has crossed many boundaries with representation in exhibitions in London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Birmingham, Melbourne and Perth. His solo exhibitions held in Perth in 1999 and 2003 were hugely successful with both shows selling out on opening night and resulting in numerous private commissions. In 2002 he achieved a Commendation Award in the highly competitive “City of Perth Invitational Art Award” and in May 2005 was invited to participate in a show in London to launch the Thames and Hudson publication “Graffiti World” where he was invited as a guest speak at the London Institute of Contemporary Arts. More recently he was invited to produce work for a group show at the Adicolour Studios in Berlin and has been invited to participate in group shows in Tokyo and Taiwan in October 2006. He has been commissioned to create works in Los Angles and London and in 2002 was invited to create large scale murals across Greece in preparation for the Olympics achieving international acclaim for his work. In 2003 he was invited to produce a limited edition toy that was retailed in Tokyo and New York and has since become highly collectable. Professor of Contemporary Art and Dean of Art at the John Curtin Centre, Curtin University, Professor Ted Snell when opening his show in 2003 drew a reference between Stormie’s work and that of Goya’s satirical expose of Spanish society published in 1799 which were designed to …. “ridicule, to upbraid prejudice, imposture and hypocrisy and other evils which have been hallowed by time.” He went on to state, “I think that fits very well with Stormie’s work. There is a sense of poignancy and a sense of familiarity that makes his commentary very pertinent and engaging.” Stormies’ work is a deeply personal expression of emotion that is captured in the layers of his paintings created through his intense observations of the texture of life to engage and challenge the viewer to explore beyond the surface to find real beauty amidst the decay. He has established a strong following for his work across a broad sector of the market continuing to attract collectors for his unique statements on life.
Phillip Gamblen
Philip’s Head (M3 × 6 zinc plated screws, M3 zinc plated hex nuts)
Gamblen is a locally based sculptor and since graduating from Claremont School of Art and Curtin University of Technology, he has been exhibiting extensively in Australia and overseas. Most of his work is generally kinetic in form and involves the use of simple mechanisms and electronics to explore technological aspects of today’s culture. In the past several years he has been investigating the cultural significance of the crossover between art and science though various collaborations with other artists and scientists.
“My work for the Deck Chair Auction is a self-portrait of sorts. Using simple imagery and a medium that I am familiar with, it is a playful comment on the way which we view the world through both digital and analogue technologies.”
Phoebe Longwood
Juliet (Swarovski pearls and bits and pieces of chain)
Phoebe Longwood is the inspirational self taught creative Designer and Director of Phoebe Designs Pty Ltd, a WA company that has a stunning range of fashion jewellery that is made here in Perth.
The Phoebe jewellery collection has been designed for a particular type of woman. It is for one that, like the designer, is willing to try anything no matter how daring, has an ageless spirit, who enjoys being their own creator of style, who at times is a little eccentric, and for the one who knows what she wants!
Within the 2 years that Phoebe Designs has been producing fashion jewellery, the company has designed the full range of jewellery for the inaugural year of the ‘Face of Perth’ modeling competition, designed for Annalise Braakensieks bridal party (2006) and has been approached to design a range to appear on the catwalk for the 2005 Boobalicious Ball. Phoebe Designs have also been worn by international model Liz Hurley and appeared in many magazines including Vogue Australia, Perth Woman, Scoop Magazine and OK Magazine. The company has been picked up by the ‘MORE’ chain of fashion stores in WA and additional boutiques and in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.

Jimmy Pike
Seven Sisters (10m x 5m Acrylic on canvas)
Jimmy Pike was a Walmajarri man who was born in his family’s country in Western Australia’s Great Sandy Desert. He left the desert when he was still a boy, and went to work on cattle stations in the Kimberly, as did most of his close relations. Later he lived in Fitzroy Crossing and became one of Australia’s leading artists, whose work demonstrated the spirituality and beauty of his homelands to both national and international audiences.
Pike’s art works are highly regarded and much sought after. They have been exhibited across Europe, the United States and Asia as well as Australia. In 2000 he was the first Australian artist to have a work included at the National Gallery of China in Beijing. His partnership with the clothing label Desert Designs also brought him commercial success.
Pike’s ghost gum backdrops “Dawn” and “Sunset” set a record price when they sold at the last GREAT DECK CHIAR AUCTION. Due to a lack of appropriate storage deckchair theatre is offering for sale Pike’s beautiful “Seven Sisters” sky cloth (5m x 10m). The sky cloth was painted for deckchair’s 2000 show JIMMY AND PAT MEET THE QUEEN and is unique in terms of the scale of the work. Jimmy Pike is sadly missed by all of us at deckchair theatre.

David Spencer
Sardena (mixed media)
Recently acknowledge in Insite Magazine (by Joy Legge) as an artist to collect for under $5000 (though sales of his current work is greatly exceeding that amount), Spencer has had several group exhibitions both in WA and interstate, as well as sellout solo exhibitions. Currently working towards his next solo exhibition in August, Spencer’s vibrant and dramatic art is an observation of the modern industrial world. His paintings are emotionally charged with bright colour and is enlightened by pattern and reoccurring symbols. With these elements combined, we discover a composition that both dignifies his imagination and the subject he choses to explore.
