Mavis Goes To Timor

deckchair theatre's runaway hit of the 2002 Perth International Arts Festival, MAVIS GOES TO TIMOR was destined to be seen throughout Australia. As part of a national tour this wonderful production will be at the Playhouse in Perth for two performances only.

Mavis is an 86 year old haberdasher from Yarrawonga, Victoria, who surprises family and friends by going off to East Timor to help set up a women's sewing co-operative.

For somebody who has never left Australia before, travelling to a country like East Timor is a great shock. The country was devastated as Indonesia withdrew its occupation forces in 1999. Most of the houses are gone, its people dislocated, and its economy in tatters.

Amid the destruction and buoyed up by the people's overwhelming faith and positivity, Mavis struggles on, tackling the deprivation, the bureaucratic red tape and her own doubts that she is up to the job.

MAVIS GOES TO TIMOR was nominated in the prestigious 2002 National Helpmann Awards for Best New Australian Work and in the International Foundation For Arts and Culture/Equity Guild Awards for Best New Work and Best Director.

"Mavis' story is a heart-rending affirmation that spirited, committed people, no matter what their age, can make a difference."
