Dancing In My Kitchen

2003 will see the development of a new work for performance in 2004.

DANCING IN MY KITCHEN brings to life the stories of a group of women over 60 from Collingwood, one of Melbourne's most vibrant inner-city suburbs.

The tales deal with the everyday - birthin's and bashin's, living 'two up, two down', sleeping four to a bed, footy and factory work, wartime and widowhood, Squizzy Taylor and the six o'clock swill, singing around the old piano and dancing in the kitchen.

Over endless cups of tea they ply their homespun wisdom and reflect on their triumphs and struggles in the rich and colourful local idiom - through confronting hardship they have found a kind of grace.

DANCING IN MY KITCHEN is a one woman show starring Australia's acting icon Anne Phelan, seen as the indomitable Mavis Taylor in deckchair's 2002 Perth International Arts Festival hit MAVIS GOES TO TIMOR.
