EYE OF THE STORM

Artistic Director's Welcome

To realise that we are all more beautiful and wondrous than we ever thought possible is the goal of our 2005 programme. Theatre has a role in affirming that life is precious. As I write this thousands of people all over the world are suffering from the after effects of an enormous natural disaster. Two of the people I hold very dear are lucky to be alive. Their’s is but one of the stories that have arisen from this terrible time. But it is a happy and deeply moving story, a story of love and survival.

Love and survival are common themes in the programme this year. From the games and catastrophes of love in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING to the survival of the human body and spirit in A BELL IN THE STORM. There is brave and challenging love in BRATWURST AND DAMPER and sweet unexpected love amongst the tales of survival in THE LIGHTKEEPER.

2005 is also a year that will see deckchair add a couple of new locations for our audiences to explore. THE LIGHTKEEPER by Verity Laughton will fittingly be performed at the Fremantle Maritime Museum and in what we believe is a world first, A BELL IN THE STORM by David Buchanan will have its world premiere in the Planetarium at SciTech Discovery Centre. We are not abandoning the grand old lady Victoria Hall, with BRATWURST AND DAMPER by Lilly Radloff having its first season in our home. This production will also give you all an opportunity to have a drink at our funky new bar.

Music has always played a big part in deckchair’s work and 2005 will see us exploring its role to an even greater extent. This development of the company’s work will see us realise a new direction while keeping all the things you love about us.

2005, a year of surprises and realisations. Realise your love of the theatre and see all of our shows this year. Bring someone you love and bring your precious self.
