EMERGING ARTISTS’ PROGRAM

The Emerging Artists Program provides creative opportunities for W.A. based artists to develop their craft, providing a pathway into the professional theatre industry.
Each year an Emerging Designer and an Emerging Director or Dramaturg, is given the opportunity to be mentored in their respective discipline by professional artists at Deckchair Theatre over a 12-month period. They will be engaged as Assistants on each major production the company produces over the course of the year, as well as having the opportunity to assist on creative development projects.

Total engagement is a minimum of 15 weeks full-time, with the potential for further opportunities throughout the year. This will include an opportunity for the artists to develop, create and present their own work at Victoria Hall following a creative development fortnight, with structured support and advice from their mentors.

The artists will be given the opportunity to receive career counselling and advice from a range of industry experts, witness professional production and rehearsal processes from concept to opening night and actively contribute to this process, be given first-hand experience of the practical inner-workings of a professional theatre company, and be given a supportive environment and resources to develop their own artistic practice.

This program will act as a launching pad to provide Emerging Artists with the necessary tools to build successful and sustainable careers as professional theatre artists in Western Australia, and provide our most talented and promising practitioners with the experience necessary to make that transition possible.

The Emerging Artist positions will be available by application, chosen by the Artistic Director and a panel of industry peers, and is open to young and emerging theatre artists in the first three years of their professional practice, with a demonstrated commitment to making a career in theatre in Western Australia.

Deckchair Theatre is not currently accepting any interest in a 2013 program.
